Visiting research fellowships

Each year our fellowship programme enables artists and researchers to develop their work.

Fellowships allow researchers to spend a month using our facilities in Leeds, and include accommodation, travel and subsistence expenses.

The Henry Moore Institute is a world-recognised centre for the study of sculpture. We host a year-round programme of exhibitions, conferences and lectures, as well as developing research and publications, to expand the understanding and scholarship of sculpture.

What’s included

Research Fellows will be given the opportunity to spend a month using our research facilities in Leeds.

Fellowships include accommodation, travel and subsistence expenses.

Types of fellowship

Visiting Research Fellowships

Intended for academics or curators working on historic and contemporary sculpture, who can make particular use of the Institute’s resources: our Research Library, Archive of Sculptors’ Papers and the Leeds Sculpture Collections.

Artist Research Fellowships

Designed for artists to develop their practice through research, using the Institute’s resources. These fellowships support a range of visual arts practices and outcomes, generated through research into sculpture and its histories.

Please note that the fellowship is for research only and we are unable to offer studio facilities.

Senior Fellowships

Through these longer (six week) fellowships, we give established scholars time and space to develop a research project free from usual work commitments.

Sculpture Research Library

With more than 30,000 books, exhibition catalogues, journals and audio-visual items, the library is an outstanding resource for studying sculpture.

Archive of Sculptors’ Papers

The working lives of hundreds of sculptors are captured in their photographs, letters, drawings and sketchbooks, alongside film, digital records and even tools and costume.

Leeds sculpture collection

We oversee the development of Leeds Museums and Galleries’ sculpture collections, a partnership that has built one of the strongest collections of British sculpture in the country.

Fellowships are intended to be based in Leeds. Archival material relating to Henry Moore is housed in purpose-built facilities at Henry Moore Studios and Gardens in Hertfordshire. If your research will require access to material held at Henry Moore Studios and Gardens, please specify this in your application.
