Families
Encouraging people of all ages to engage with sculpture as learners, thinkers and makers.
Visiting with your family
We provide free activities for your family to get the most out of a visit to the Institute.
These are linked to our exhibitions and change with the themes and subjects of the sculpture on display.
They are available for you to use when you visit Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:00.
Explorer Bags
Borrow an Explorer Bag to take around on your visit.
The bags are filled with objects and activities for younger visitors in response our exhibition Lungiswa Gqunta: Sleep in Witness.
Sculpting the Sea
Visit our alcove area to play with our interactive wire installation Sculpting the Sea, which playfully examines Lungiswa Gqunta’s work Ntabamanzi.
Reference library in the alcove
Browse the family oriented reference library, aimed at supporting younger visitors’ understanding of some of the issues raised in Lungiswa Gqunta’s work.
Family Workshops
We run free, artist-led creative family workshops during the school holidays in Leeds.
These are intergenerational events, where children and their adults make together. We encourage creativity in all ages!

Facilities at the Institute
Step free access
Visitors who prefer a step-free entrance can use the accessible entrance on Cookridge Street and take the lift to bring you onto the ground floor where you will find all the Galleries on the same floor.
There is a passenger lift to all other floors, measuring 100cm wide by 136cm deep, with a doorway 72cm wide.
Toilets and baby changing facilities
Toilets are located on the basement level, including baby changing facilities in the accessible and gender-neutral toilet.
Pushchairs
Unfortunately we do not have storage facilities for luggage or pushchairs, however at less busy times it may be possible to leave them by the welcome desk while you visit – please ask a member of staff first, and remember to take any valuables with you. All items are left at the owner’s risk.
Tell us how we can help
We are keen to make it as easy as possible for you to visit with your family.
If you have any access needs, that are not mentioned above or on our accessibility page, please get in touch to discuss your visit.
Some of the images on this page were kindly supplied by Jenny Elliot.
